I think you missed some of the subtlety of the writing in the Johnny Dollar Latourette case. The fact that Evelyn was plain-looking contrasts with the widow’s (otherwise superfluous and inappropriate) musings that she was attractive enough to find another man. It also provides some psychological insight into the murderer’s motive: her frustrated desperation at the prospect of never finding love in her life.
