Newspaper reporter Dorothy Patterson is contacted by the desperate mother of five-year-old Johnny McDermott, who is gravely ill and needs an expensive experimental treatment his family cannot afford. Despite warnings that readers won’t contribute thousands of dollars to help a child they don’t know, Dorothy puts her faith in the generosity of her community and uses her newspaper column to make an appeal on Johnny’s behalf.

I’m a few days behind and catching up, but I had to chuckle at your commentary on this episode of The Big Story. My granddaddy was a Patterson. His birth name was Jasper. A handful of people called him that. Another group of people called him JG, but most people, including family called him Pat. I remember asking my mom, “Why did his parents call him Pat if his last name was already Patterson?!” She laughed and explained all the names.
Anyway, it makes me wonder if at that time, it was common for people with the last name Patterson to take the nickname Pat. But not curious enough to research it!
