There were a few references to 1950 current pop psychology in the episode.
“What the girl’s equivalent to the Oedipus Complex?”
the Lieutenant asked the Saint.
The answer, not given in the dialog, is the Electra Complex.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electra_complex,
after Elektra, the character in Greek drama who
brought down the House of Atreus to avenge her father.
The more surprising reference was from the roommate who knew all
the latest trends in psychology. She dismissed Freudian analysis as “old hat”,
saying she followed Dianetics.
That name she so breezily dropped is now better known as
Scientology (and today has taken over a considerable portion
of the Hollywood community).
I don’t know if the writers had an active interest in it
or if they were just mentioning the latest trend to sound up-to-date.
The film “The Master” from a few years back recounts
the same historical point in time as this Saint episode portrays.
