A couple of thoughts regarding your discussion of the word “dealer”… I think that much of the reason that that usage has fallen out of favor is related more to changes in the way products were marketed than to any connotations. For instance, while you might have several TV and Appliance Stores in a particular area, not all might be dealers for a specific brand, hence the “authorized dealer” reference. (Ditto at the time for grocers and Kraft cheese.) Over time, particularly in the 1960s, retail shifted to a model where most major brands were carried by most major stores. The idea of going to a “dealer” is now limited to automobiles and to “niche” or high-end products such as jewelry.
