George’s revelation about why the color of the sweater in the photo appeared to be the opposite of the real sweater reminded of the “What color is the dress?” Internet sensation from several months ago. In that case, a dress which was actually blue and black appeared to many to be gold and white. According to the Wikipedia entry for “The dress” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_dress), the disagreement appears to stem from how the human brain perceives color and chromatic adaptation.

The key seems to be in how the brain processes the various hues of a daylight sky, specifically whether the brain tries to correct for what it believes is a blue-tinted or gold-tinted lighting. Coincidentally, blue and gold are the colors of the sweater in the episode.
