Surprised to hear you say that this is not a great episode. Thought it was one of the better Dragnet episodes. The reading of the article (it’s not a poem) worked really well. The way the actor drifted away from the voice of the old man to the voice of the author was excellent.
Also, maybe you weren’t giving the episode your full attention… The guy responsible didn’t just walk up and confess. A uniformed policeman picked him up in a back alley a couple of blocks away throwing meat over the back fences into people’s yards. It all fits very well with what the neighbor was saying about needing a “piece of the bait.” So now they were able to prosecute.
I seem to remember “The Big Dog” as a television episode as well as radio. I was just a boy then but I never forgot it. It was very well done, with Jack and Ben Alexander as Smith. I think I can find it if I just knew where to look.
