Re: the “Charlie Chan” radio program being aired, it’s good that a series of such vintage exists, although I find these overly laden with dialogue, which lessens their listenability.
To negatively compare adopting Chinese characteristics for a role by a non-Oriental actor is foolish. After all, actors are supposed to act. Keye Luke, for instance, was a talented Chinese performer, but would he have equaled Warner Oland or Sidney Toler as Chan instead of enacting one of his children? I think not.
Regarding the idea put forth in the Walter Connolly series of all of the suspects being, in effect, the murderer, this device had been employed earlier by the late Agatha Christie. One example being a tour de force, second only to her 1939 classic, “And Then There Were None” (which the writing of, she admitted, gave her much trouble). And while the solution to the former strains credulity, it is remarkable, especially as put forth in impressive detail by Hercule Poirot. Christie’s mystery output, more often than not, falls short of her finest works — the “Miss Marple” entries of lesser quality than those featuring her Belgian sleuth — possibly the result of her prolificness — but she is reportedly now the world’s most successful writer!
ADAM: CAN YOU FORWARD MY “CHARLIE CHAN” COMMENTS TO MY SISTER AT “Marlenecondon@aol.com”? My computer won’t let me do this, for whatever reason. Thanks! — R.C.
