Nominate the Great Detectives of Old TIme Radio for the People’s Choice Podcast Awards

After an absence of several years, I’m once against throwing my crumpled brown fedora into the ring for the Podcast Awards.

This year, I’m registering in not one but two categories. The entertainment category and the best Male Hosted Podcast and you can support our nomination in both categories here.

In addition to our own nomination, I want to endorse a past sponsor of our podcast in the Technology Category. The Malicious Life podcast sponsored our show when they were first getting started for around eight episodes. I’ve continued to listen to them every week since. They tell great stories about cybercrime and cybersecurity and that entire landscape. I also nominated them in the People’s Choice Category as well.

So I encourage you to nominate me. You have until July 31st. It’s a great way to promote the podcast and hopefully make some connections.

It’s a Jungle Out There: Worldwide Monk Watch Party

There’s one obvious detective for these difficult times, with so much negative news and people having to be so careful about everything: Adrian Monk (played by Emmy Award Winner Tony Shalloub).

From 2002-2008, Monk solved mysteries over the USA Network while confronting his large number of phobias and personal demons with humor and humanity.

On Sunday, March 29 at 8:00 PM Eastern Time, Monk fans will rewatch the first episode from Season 1, Mr. Monk and the Candidate.

You can share your thoughts as you watch the episode on our Facebook event page. You can also post thoughts on Twitter using the hashtag #itsajungle

The episode is available for free if you’re subscribed to Amazon Prime. It’s also available on DVD or for purchase in the Apple Store.

Special thanks to Emily Cook whose #SavetheDay campaign to have Doctor Who fans rewatch Day of the Doctor (the 50th Anniversary special for Doctor Who) was the inspiration for this event.

YouTube Channel Caught Up

Since I announced the YouTube channel a little more than four months ago, I’ve been working to bring our show’s archives to YouTube to introduce the Great and after a long process filled with trial and error, I’m pleased to announce that were caught up to where I want the channel to be. As it’s an archive, the YouTube channel is ten weeks behind the podcast feed.

Currently our YouTube channel features 2,243 videos including the last eight episodes of our Public Domain Video Theater. With YouTube’s Playlist feature, listeners can from start to finish through fifty-eight series playlists as well as seven complete seasons playlists. In addition, we have special playlists such as the one containing all of our special episodes and our lady sleuth playlist.

What’s next for the channel? Those who follow the show the show on YouTube will get six new detective episodes a week on a daily schedule of the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio. In addition, I’ll be posting old episodes of the Amazing World of Radio and the War. I won’t be posting Superman as there are way too many episodes of that series that it needs own channel. I’ll also be working on a channel trainer and getting channel art added.

Youtube is a great new venture, but our podcast remains our primary contact with the audience. Last month, we had under 16,000 views on YouTube which is pretty impressive until you realize we had 713,000 unique downloads from the podcast. However, you interact with the show, as always, thank you for listening and for supporting the show.

Great Detectives Adoption Auction

My wife and I are pursuing adoption after many years of childlessness. A big part of that effort is raising funds. Adoption in America is expensive, particularly if you’re wanting to adopt a baby. So, a big part of that process is raising funds.

As part of that process, I’m auctioning off several items on eBay. I chose these specifically because I believed they’d appeal to fans of the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio. Among the items offered are old time radio box sets including the high quality audio of Volumes 1, 2, and 4 of Radio Archives Let George Do It collections, along with Avengers: The Lost Episodes and Doctor Who: The Lost Stories audio dramas. We also have classic movie DVDs featuring Philip Marlowe, Michael Shayne, and Boston Blackie In addition, you can get classic TV DVDs including the Complete Third Season of Cannon, as well as episodes of Dragnet, Richard Diamond, Philip Marlowe, and Racket Squad. I’ll even be adding a few VHS tapes tonight for the truly nostalgic. So check out all of my auctions on eBay. (Update: VHS tapes added including Casablanca.)

Beyond that, if you happen to be in the Boise area (or would be willing to pay for shipping elsewhere), I have my entire childhood 18,000 baseball card collection on sale on Craig’s List. The cards are mostly from the 1990s.

Finally, if you’re not interested in anything for sale, you can check out our GoFundMe page where my wife shares her heart about the adoption and you can make a contribution there if you so desire.

All I Needed to Know I Learned from Dragnet Released

After the success of All I Needed to Know I Learned from ColumboI’m pleased to announce the release of my latest e-book, All I Needed to Know I Learned from Dragnet  for the Kindle. (The book is available at Smashwords (use coupon code ZV36M to purchase the book for the introductory price of $2.99)  The description of the book follows below:

Detective stories have been entertaining people for decades. The best fictional detectives are old friends who take us on amazing adventures. Along the way, they teach us a lot of life lessons.

Join podcaster and author Adam Graham on this fun journey through the annals of detective fiction. He examines the history and career of seven more of the greatest detectives and police officers from literature, radio, and television in this sequel to All I Needed to Know I Learned from Columbo. Among the way, he’ll examine some key insights from these beloved detectives, including:

-The importance of listening to others from Hercules Poirot
-How to avoid cynicism from insurance-investigator Johnny Dollar
-How to properly motivate others from Sergeant Joe Friday
-The importance of personal integrity from Officer Pete Malloy
-Being understanding of the frailties of others from Frank Cannon

In addition to twenty thought-provoking life lessons, the book also contains several appendices, including Graham’s list of the best Dragnet stories ever and a brief history of two-fisted, weight-challenged detectives. All I Needed to Know I Learned from Dragnet is a great resource for fans of detective fiction.

I’ve spent most of 2014 working on it and the result is longer than its predecessor with twelve life lessons instead of twenty. The Detectives profiled in this book are:

  • Hercules Poirot
  • Frank Race
  • Johnny Dollar
  • Sergeant Joe Friday
  • Officers Pete Malloy and Jim Reed
  • Lieutenant John Weston (Lock Up)
  • Frank Cannon

Through January 11th, All I Needed to Know I Learned from Dragnet is being offered on the Kindle at an introductory price of $2.99 (before it goes to the normal price of $3.99) and All I Needed to Know I Learned from Columbo is on sale for 99 cents in the Kindle store.

For all other e-readers, the books can be purchased through Smashwords and discount obtained through coupon codes.  For All I Needed to Know I Learned from Dragnet,  use coupon code ZV36M, For All I Needed to Know I Learned from Columbo  use coupon code MD72G.
