I’ve long loved these “Bulldog Drummond” features produced by Paramount in the latter half of the Thirties. I don’t believe John Howard was ever more handsome and engaging than in this series, despite a lengthy acting career in motion pictures and television. He had the title role in all but the initial entry, that starring Ray Milland in 1937. The supporting regulars were likewise excellent, especially when interacting with each other; the villains among the most colorful in cinema; and each entry had a wonderful gloss despite running times of only about an hour. Whereas Paramount was one of the first major film companies to release their vintage movies to television in the later Fifties, these fully intact (via MCA), their “Bulldog Drumond” series appeared on TV at the same time, but with fudged credit cards, minus the Paramount mountain logo, and attributed to Congress Film, Inc. I suspect the original 35mm nitrate material was physically edited being as I’ve never seen these fully restored to their original release status.
