Hi Adam.
I’ve been really enjoying the Australian editions of The Fat Man, which are very well-done and to my (admittedly English) ears sound authentically American. Lloyd Berrell’s performance as Brad Runyon makes we wonder about how actors go about sounding fat when performing on the radio. Berrell was only 29 years old at the time the shows were recorded and would only live to the age of 31. Sidney Greenstreet as Nero Wolfe of course could act like a fat man to the manor born. My favourite Old Time Radio fat performance is Lawrence Dobkin as the obese Sgt. Meyers in The Man from Homicide. Dobkin was anything but fat in real life but created a vivid picture in sound of a 300 lb detective.
