I’m curious. If the villain is drawing a bead on the hero and I come up with my pistol and shoot him before he can dispatch the hero, can I plead self-defense? I was never personally threatened.
I prevented a murder by performing one of my own. Does motive count?

Any judges, lawyers or prosecutors in your audience? Can I get a ruling?
